Schist of Elk Knob State Park

Schist aka "metamorphosed ocean floor-sediment"

Elk Knob schist is easily distinguished from amphibolite because it is lighter in color and is "shiney" due to its high mica (biotite and/or muscovite) content

Schist is the most dominant rock type in the mixed rock layer at Elk Knob.

Triassic sediments
Large kyanite porphyroblasts do occur in aluminum-rich Elk Knob schist. Kyanite is a common metamorphic mineral indicative of medium-grade, mountain-building metamorphism. Triassic Sediments Chapel Hill WWTP
